Hobart - Northern routes
North of Hobart City Centre are the suburbs of North Hobart, New Town and Lenah Valley.
Elizabeth St, North Hobart
As part of a streetscape upgrade planned in 2019 between Melville Street and Warwick Street, Council prepared a design that included uphill bicycle lanes. Cycling South's comments can be viewed here. An uphill bike lane was trialled alongside new parklets on the block between Mevlille and Brisbane Streetin 2021.

Commercial Road
Commercial Road provides a handy connection between the top of Elizabeth St near Friens Health & Fitness to Federal St, allowing bike riders to bypass the busy section of Elizabeth St and connect to the Argyle St bicycle lanes via Federal St. Although it is a 2-way road access is closed to motor vehicles at the northern end. An entry point was installed in 2018.

New Town Road corridor
New Town Road is an important cycling corridor which was looked at as part of the New Town Retail Precinct Upgrade in 2018. A few locations along the corridor were identified for short sections of uphill bike lanes, primarily the section between Pirie Sreet and Argyle Street.
-
May 2022 - Works were done to install a raised pedestrian crossing and incorporate an uphill bike lane between Pirie St and Argyle St. Pirie St is a back route that allows riders to avoid busy New Town Road.
-
October 2022. New local street directional cycling signage was installed on preferred cycling routes in New Town. The signage provides guidance between the Intercity Cycleway at Bay St/New Town Nursery, shops on New Town Road, North Hobart via Pirie St and Maypole corner at Risdon Road.
Intercity Cycleway links
The Intercity Cycleway is an arterial entry point to Hobart for riders from the eastern shore or northern suburbs. The connection at the end of the Intercity Cycleway at the Regatta Grounds to the City and Waterfront are vital for transport cycling.
-
2020. The Rose Garden Bridge over the Brooker Highway at Bathurst St opened, providing a link from the Intercity Cycleway to Campbell St and is a useful connection for people heading to/from the UTAS Medical precinct.
New Town Rivulet
The New Town Rivulet runs through Upper Lenah Valley to New Town Bay, mostly parallel to Lenah Valley Road and Creek Road. The Maypole Creek runs parallel to Forster St and Risdon Road in New Town, although sections are piped underground.
Both waterways provide east-west links between Lenah Valley and New Town to the Intercity Cycleway. If cycling infrastructure was developed along these corridors they would provide connections to schools and shopping centres from residential areas.
-
2023 - City of Hobart released a draft Local Area Mobility Plan (LAMP) for the northern suburbs, which includes a proposed separated cycleway along Creek Road. There is a narrow footpath alongside New Town Rivulet but it's in poor condition, disjointed and lacks space. The proposed separated cycleway along Creek Road is 2.7m wide with a 300mm buffer from the 3.0m wide travel lanes. It has been identified as high priority in the LAMP. A shared path along the New Town Rivulet between Lenah Valley Road and the Intercity Cycleway has been identified as a long term priority in the LAMP.
Augusta Road & Lenah Valley Road
This route is a major connector between Lenah Valley and parts of Mt Stuart to the city.
-
2015 - Uphill bike lanes were installed on Augusta Road as part of a Vulnerable Road Users Project to install a median on Augusta Road between Giblin St and Creek Road to improve pedestrian safety. There is insufficient road width to have bike lanes in both directions as well as a median.
-
2018 - Bike lanes were installed outside the Lenah Valley shops
-
2023 - A draft Local Area Mobility Plan (LAMP) was released by City of Hobart that identifies separated cycleways on Augusta Road. The plan proposes four options. A bi-directional cycleway is more space efficient but a single cycleway on each side of the road can be more convenient and intuitive to use. Augusta Road cycling improvements are a high priority for implementation in the LAMP.
Risdon Road - Forster St corridor
A cross town connection between Lenah Valley, New Town Plaza and Cornelian Bay/Lutana.
-
March 2021 - Bike lanes were installed on Forster St, New Town.
-
Nov 2022 - As part of a road upgrade on Giblin St, New Town, City of Hobart installed an uphill bike lane adjacent to low turnover residential car parking by shifting the centre median over slightly. Giblin St is an important connector between Lenah Valley Road and Forster St/Risdon Road. Unfortunately Pedder St has a barrier that prevents riders from easily accessing Giblin St or Forster St but it was outside the scope of the project. A request has been made to City of Hobart to design and construct a cycling connection at the end of Pedder St which is a quiet local street bike route.
