East Derwent Highway
The East Derwent Hwy runs through the municipalities of Brighton and Clarence, linking the suburbs of Bridgewater, Gagebrook, Old Beach, Otago, Geilston Bay, Lindisfarne and Rose Bay
Bridgewater to Bowen
In 2023 the Department carried out public consultation as part of a planning study for the corridor. Cycling, walking and crossing the road were identified as issues in the feedback.
Geilston Bay
In 2022, as part of duplication of the roadway, on-road painted bike lanes and an off-road shared path were included in the project. The shared path a new traffic signals at Clinton Road provide a final connection to Lindisfarne North Primary School from the Sugarloaf Road path.
Bowen Bridge access
In 2015 a new slip lane was constructed from the East Derwent Hwy (which eliminated a right hand turn for southbound riders and drivers at the intersection of the East Derwent Hwy) includes cycle-friendly design. A wide shoulder was incorporated on the slip lane for southbound riders while a turning bay was provided for riders heading for the Bowen Bridge. For riders heading towards the eastern shore on the Bowen Bridge a green lane was installed across the slip lane to alert drivers to the presence of cyclists.
