In December 2018 Cycling South made a submission to the Domain Highways Planning Study.
The Queens Domain Masterplan adopted by City of Hobart in 2013 identified that the Queens Domain was difficult to get to by car, foot or bike and that there was no access at all from New Town. The Masterplan states “the Domain is an island with few clear and safe links to it – cut off from the City by 50,000–60,000 cars moving around its edge each day.”
The highways surrounding the Domain cut off access from surrounding residential areas (North Hobart, New Town, Cornelian Bay & Lutana) and even short journeys to the Domain need to be done by car. Provision for people to walk or cycle to the Domain needs to be accommodated in planning for the Domain Highways and not just consideration on how to move more motor vehicles through the area.
The submission made several recommendations:
-
Improve the crossing between the Intercity Cycleway and botanical gardens by widening the central median;
-
Construct a shared path along the batter of the Brooker Hwy between Risdon Road and Cornelian Bay (Intercity Cycleway);
-
A pedestrian bridge to link Cornelian Bay to Queens Domain;
